England Riots: UK Considering Blocking Twitter and Blackberry

The prime minister of the UK has said that the government is pondering blocking certain social network websites and text messaging services during riots and public unrest like what occurred there recently.

It is thought that rioters and looters took to social sites like Facebook and Twitter as a way to organize their destructive behavior. Blackberry handsets were also used by many in the angry crowds to text messages to other, encouraging looting and rioting. The release of this information is not sitting well with many people in the UK and beyond as it has hints of what ex-Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak did in Egypt before he was forced out of office. In particular, civil liberty groups are not pleased as most feel strongly that people have their rights to privacy.

PM Cameron is trying to take a tough stand following the four days of heavy rioting in England. Whether or not the government will follow through is anyone’s guess but if it is done in the future, it is sure to raise some eyebrows around the world. What do you think? Hacker Group ‘Anonymous’ at it Again: Threatens to “Destroy” Facebook

The well-known hacking group which calls itself Anonymous announced recently that it is making preparations to destroy Facebook on November 5th. As with all announcements broadcast online by this group of unknown people, we will have to wait to see if this is a real message or simply an announcement made by one of the group’s members.

The threat is said to be directed at Facebook due to two recent cases wherein the social network site has been accused of wrongdoing. The first allegation comes from the ACLU, which does not like the privacy settings used on the site. The other allegation has to do with Facebook taking data and numbers from iPhone users.

The group says that it was them who hacked into Syria’s defense website earlier this week. At the end of 2010, Anonymous attempted but failed to take down Amazon.com. The reason Amazon was targeted was due to the fact that the online retail giant kicked WikiLeaks off its we hosting service. The group also has claimed responsibility for attacking and disrupting the websites of MasterCard, PayPal, Visa and oddly, the Church of Scientology.

If you had planned on becoming friends with Anonymous on Facebook, it is very likely that the group will not approve your friend request. If the date of November 5th does not ring a bell with you, it’s the day when Brits shot off fireworks in honour of Guy Fawkes, the man who had a need to blow up the House of Parliament. We’ll have to see what, if anything, occurs on the 5th of November as the group has made many threats in the past but did not act on them. Maybe the powers behind Facebook will try to make peace with the group by giving them a incredible fan page or something!

What Does Apple’s iOS 5 Have in Store?

Over the past weekend, a beta version of Apple’s new operating system was released to developers. Thus far, iOS 5 seems to contain mostly bug fixes although a few features have been brought out into the open.

We can expect Steve Jobs and his team to announce soon that iOS 5 will be available this fall. This is known because Apple has a habit of releasing the beta version a couple of weeks prior to the announcement of its availability. However, there is a distinct possibility that one or two more beta versions will be released prior to iOS 5 being available to the general public as this is something Apply typically does. We’ll just have to wait and see if that does indeed occur.

There are rumors that iOS 5 will feature voice recognition. The rumors are most likely true because Google is already a step ahead of Apple in that department as Android users can already “tell” their phones to call someone. It is possible that Apple will also develop voice search for the iOS 5 as it purchased Siri a few month back which is a software maker that specializes in voice-driven search.

The new iOS 5 also will feature a hearing aide mode which will improve the compatibility between the various Apple devices and hearing aides. The beta also suggests that the company is working on its next iPad due to some rather obscure features designed for touch capabilities.

Facebook “Spam King” Turns Himself In

You may be one of the millions of Facebook users who has received a whole lot of spam messages on your profile page over the past couple of years. Well, now a man from the United States who has been dubbed “Spam King” has turned himself in to the FBI in the state of California so you may not be a victim any longer.

Prosecutors report that Mr. Sanford Wallace devised a program that broke through the spam filters on Facebook so that he could lure users into submitting their Facebook information details. Although Wallace denies those charges, each charge he faces carries a prison sentence of up to ten years. He is now out on a $100,000 bond and is awaiting court action.

The program Wallace used posted messages on the walls of Facebook users which were designed to look like they came from acquaintances asking users to visit sites where they were asked to provide their account information. This information was then harvested by Wallace for profit. Wallace earned a great deal of money by re-directing the account details he stole to affiliate websites, so say the charges against him. The program Wallace used also grabbed lists of users’ friends and posted spammy messages on their walls.

About a half million Facebook accounts were attacked between the end of 2008 and March 2009, leading to nearly 29 million spam messages being sent. Wallace, who is from from Las Vegas was sued by Facebook in 2009 and he has been ordered not to use Facebook for the time being. However, prosecutors say that Wallace already violated that order earlier this year.
